Similarities and differences in a range of visible and invisible characteristics make people in an organization unique. Devaluing, bullying, and discrimination (also outside of work) prevent employees from developing their potential and are significant obstacles to creativity and innovation. Consciously addressing cultural barriers in the workplace and valuing differences between individuals helps to reduce prejudice. It ensures an open-minded atmosphere in the team as well as a corporate culture of openness regarding differences. Management and executives can set an example in dealing with diversity issues and challenges in a reflective manner and thus contribute to a “culture of diversity”.
